Leslie's Place, operated by Leslie Brown on Chicago's West Side, continues to be the only transitional program that unites women leaving prison with their children. Leslie offers what she calls a "sober, homelike" atmosphere for the women -- and the facility is always full. Twelve to 14 women, along with half a dozen children, find a temporary home there. Leslie reports that last year she had to turn 30 or so women away because she had no room. Her dream is to find a larger building that can house 24 to 36 women -- along with the resources to operate it.
